Hong Kong’s rich musical and cinematic heritage provides the inspiration behind “Hong Kong,” a special release from Canadian superstar The Weeknd. The track brings together his atmospheric R&B sound and elements of classic Cantopop, creating a musical connection between contemporary global music and the city’s cultural identity.
One of the song’s standout features is its sample of “Monsoon” (季候風), also known as “Seasonal Wind,” a 1993 classic by Cantopop legend Faye Wong. Her airy vocals blend with The Weeknd’s signature sound, giving the release a distinctive character rooted in Hong Kong’s musical history.
The Weeknd first introduced “Hong Kong” on October 24, 2026, during the opening night of his concert residency at Kai Tak Stadium. The release also follows his approach of unveiling location-inspired music during selected stops on the After Hours Til Dawn Tour.
Beyond its musical influences, the accompanying visuals draw inspiration from the cinematic style of renowned filmmaker Wong Kar-wai. Featuring locations such as Central, The Peak, and the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, the visuals capture the neon-lit atmosphere associated with classic films including Chungking Express and Fallen Angels.
Through “Hong Kong,” The Weeknd pays tribute to the city’s cultural identity, combining contemporary R&B with its celebrated musical and cinematic influences.
